Hello there,

On my mind

I enjoy speaking about Native American topics and issues, as well as fiction, literature, and current events. I'm currently working on some new fiction as well as some nonfiction. I'm thinking/writing about these topics now: criminal justice, history, law, and environmental issues. And I love chatting about music!

Why I'm excited to talk with readers

I love speaking with my readers! Although I get to talk a bit during events and book signings, I rarely get the chance to engage in longer conversations.

Also!

Although I'm best known for my work in Indigenous issues, I also teach political science courses at my university, and I'm also a (nonpracticing) attorney.

Looking forward,

David

Where I've written

Winter Counts

Virgil Wounded Horse is the local enforcer on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  When justice is denied by the American legal system or the tribal council, Virgil is hired to deliver his own punishment, the kind that’s hard to forget. But when heroin makes its way into the reservation and finds Virgil’s own nephew, his vigilantism suddenly becomes personal. He enlists the help of his ex-girlfriend and sets out to learn where the drugs are coming from, and make them stop.

Winter Counts is a tour-de-force of crime fiction, a bracingly honest look at a long-ignored part of American life, and a twisting, turning story that’s as deeply rendered as it is thrilling.

“Weiden combines funny, complex, and unforgettable characters with strong, poetic prose. . . This is crime fiction at its best.”
– Publishers Weekly (starred, boxed review)

Spotted Tail

This biography of Spotted Tail traces the life of the famous Lakota leader who expertly guided his people through a pivotal and tumultuous time in their nation’s history as they fought and then negotiated with the U.S. government. Spotted Tail is remembered for his unique leadership style and deep love for his people. Today a university is named in his honor.  This early reader is appropriate for children in grades 2-5, and those interested in the life of this great Native leader.
