Talk soon,
Sam

Hi there,

On my mind

My interests run the gamut, but I’m typically thinking about some combination of the following: Current events and politics; journalism; US, world, and Jewish history; financial and business history; the Gilded Age and World War I; dynasties (financial, political, sports—all of them, really); the writing process; books and articles I’m reading; great podcasts and documentaries; book topics I’m researching; golden retrievers; must-try recipes and bucket-list pizza, bagels, and delis; music (all kinds).

Why I'm excited to talk with readers

Writing can be a solitary pursuit, and second only to the rewarding feeling of completing a book is hearing from people who have actually read it. Readers bring fresh ideas and insights, point out overlooked storylines or (gasp!) unforced errors; they help shape how we discuss our work and how we understand the things that resonate most with our audiences. I welcome these conversations. Really, they’re one of the best parts of the job.

Drop me a line,

Dan

Where I've written

The Money Kings

The incredible saga of the German-Jewish immigrants—with now-familiar names like Goldman and Sachs, Kuhn and Loeb, Warburg and Schiff, Lehman and Seligman—who profoundly influenced the rise of modern finance (and so much more), from the New York Times best-selling author of Sons of Wichita.

"WITH THE MONEY KINGS, DANIEL SCHULMAN BECOMES OUR FOREMOST HISTORIAN OF THE AMERICAN BUSINESS DYNASTY. THE STORY BEHIND GOLDMAN SACHS AND OTHER FAMED FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS TAKES READERS TO UNEXPECTED PLACES: NOT JUST WALL STREET, BUT GERMANY AND ALABAMA, THE MIDDLE EAST AND THE LOWER EAST SIDE. SCHULMAN CONTENDS WITH BOTH THE GOOD AND EVIL THAT CONCENTRATED WEALTH CAN THRUST UPON THE WORLD—ALL WITHOUT LOSING SIGHT OF THE HUMAN TALES BEHIND THE CREATION OF MODERN FINANCE."

— Beverly Gage, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of G-Man

Sons of Wichita

Sons of Witchita traces the complicated lives and legacies of these four tycoons, as well as their business, social, and political ambitions. No matter where you fall on the ideological spectrum, the Kochs are one of the most influential dynasties of our era, but so little is publicly known about this family, their origins, how they make their money, and how they live their lives. Based on hundreds of interviews with friends, relatives, business associates, and many others, Sons of Witchita is the first major biography about this wealthy and powerful family-warts and all.

"Sons of Wichita feels as close to the truth as anyone is likely to get for a long time to come."
